No. But Chris isn't exactly a newbie, so I think it's a lot more
productive to take his report at face value and try to reproduce the
problem than to philosophize whether hostname should or should not return the
FQDN or whether we need a configuration tool for a simple one-line
config file.

I've fixed one or two subtle bugs there in the past. The code is a bit
convoluted and I wouldn't be surprised if some non-obvious bug had crept
in there again.

As I said, I'm planning to look at it. But it won't be this evening.
