I haven't read the RFCs for a while, but I suspect what Charlie said
is true. The server can accept it if it chooses to; as the client you
are violating the specs.
Changing qpsmtpd to be stricter about this would seem reasonable to
me, if the RFCs allow as we're guessing them do (maybe even do it in
the core if the change there would be clean and obvious).
