That's exactly what I was seeing (strace yielded "read(0,"), so I reduced the timeout parameter from the default of 20 minutes. I'm still going to slot in a new server (probably running Qpsmtpd::Apache) because those same boxes are also responsible for DNS and we have been having spotty problems with the DNS cache...
