It seemed like it took long enough to process all of those swaks instances (realize that I was running it on the same machine as qpsmtpd and I had 100 forked copies of swaks in memory), that one instance of swaks hit its alarm(30) and continued the SMTP conversation without waiting for qpsmtpd. I'll patch swaks to wait forever for the banner and that should never happen again.
