i wonder - is there a way to id this one? or do they all masquerade as the same hostname/ip? i am thinking not, since we could then add a line for that ip and it would cover all of them.

I don't think they're related. Blackberry has a bunch of SMTP servers, and there's ONE that uses some type of spam device that adds the illegal characters to the name. It's a crap shoot from what I can see.
