This is exactly how alias is supposed to work. Besides, /var/qmail/alias _is_
the home directory of user "alias". The critical difference is that if mail
comes for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, and user "foo" has no .qmail-bar or
.qmail-default, it is then assumed to be controlled by ~alias/.qmail-foo-bar
(as if the message was actually addressed to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>).
