I went back to check the new RFC 2821. My previous interpretation was not 
exact. It is not that case should be preserved, it must; even though taking 
case into account is discouraged.

RFC 2821 / 2.4:
...
"The local-part of a mailbox MUST BE treated as case sensitive."
...
"However, exploiting the case sensitivity of mailbox local-parts impedes 
interoperability and is discouraged."

Sorry for spreading not really correct information.
