Hello,
I am a total newbie to mail servers and don't know much about them. I
have installed qmail on my home machine. My problem is that if I try
to deliver a message to another user and it fails on any account the
next time i start qmail with ./rc & it tries to deliver the messages
even when i have precedded it with '&'. i use Red Hat Linux 6.2
why does it happen? Also, for a particular user it says that the
message is undeliverable since the mail directory of the user is
writable.
Also, can u tell me which email clients can I use under shell mode
only. [I heard Pine cannot be used].
Can anyone give me any comments on this.
Thanks and I hope it is OK for a newbie question.

Best regards,
 kat mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ok... I've followed the installation instructions at
http://www.flounder.net/qmail/qmail-howto.html -- All went well.

I've run the local injection tests (qmail-inject) listed in TEST.deliver
as included with the qmail distro. No problem.

BUT... and this is the kicker... No matter what I try, I can't seem to get
the system to pass the SMTP tests in TEST.receive! No matter how many test
messages I pass it, none ever get to the maildirs I've set up. The log
shows an odd entry every time I try it. Specifically, it claims that it
delivered the mail to 'local @willy.bluefeathertech.com' instead of the
user name it was destined for.

Forgive me if this has been asked before. I'm still new to this, and
having everything EXCEPT SMTP transfer working is very annoying.

        Insights gratefully accepted. Thanks much.

don't tell us what the logs say, include the logfile entries! We might
also need to know, who you think you're sending mail to, and entries in
locals, rcpthosts, and maybe users/assign.

Can't believe I sent that out without system details. NetBSD 1.5/SPARC on
a Sun SPARC LX, qmail 1.03. Instead of /var/qmail I used /usr/var/qmail
(more space under /usr).

        Thanks in advance.

Yup. :)

No need to send any HUP signal though. :) On HUP, qmail-send re-reads
locals and virtualdomains; OTOH, rcpthosts is read by qmail-smtpd which
is invoked on each SMTP connection.

Merry Christmas!

Ya know, I realized that about ten seconds after I pressed 'Send.' Goes to
show how frizzled I am. Sorry about that...

With that in mind, here are the pertinent details.

I have tried sending test messages, through manual keying into a telnet
connection to the SMTP port on willy, to all the users in the above

surely as if I'd passed them off to Dave Null.

I've CC'd this to the list. Thanks for your note.

What did you type in the smtp connection?

okay, what is in .qmail-default in /var/qmail/alias ?
-- this is where undeliverable mail gets sent to (if you have local devliery working
point this to a local user account)

what isin /var/qmail/doublebouceto ?

How are you starting smtpd and qmail-send ?

Thanks in advance to all who offered help. The SMTP issues I mentioned in
my request were caused by my own ignorance of basic SMTP commands. This is
what I get for not keeping a copy of RFC822 handy.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Such is life for a qmail newbie...

I know that it is not securt method ,but I have to.
