Sorry, I probably didnt explain myself well. I have a mail queue called
domain.es and its directory is /var/spool/queue/domain.es In this directory,
I have a .qmail-default, amongst the new, cur and tmp directory. Anything
that goes to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" goes to the "new" directory, unless there
is a .qmail-x file for the user it is being sent to. The user wants to have
his mail sent at "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" BUT this E-Mail has to split to two parts,
one has to be the "new" directory so that it goes to the queue reciever, and
the other has to go to his own mail account in the same server. So, I have
created a file called .qmail-user and in this file I have placed
"&[EMAIL PROTECTED]" and on a new line, I have placed "&[EMAIL PROTECTED]". The
problem is that th message loops, and does not go to the "new" directory. So,
when I send a message to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" it goes to his own mail account,
and tries to go to the queue, only that the file ".qmail-user" is for
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]", so the message loops... ...it tries to get sent to itself
over and over again. How could I solve this ?

No, you have a virtual domain called domain.es. You have only one
mail queue, and it is in /var/qmail/queue. (When you misuse the
terminology like this, it's difficult to understand your question.)
> and its directory is /var/spool/queue/domain.es
Virtual domains don't have directories, exactly. What I think you
mean to say is that /var/spool/queue/domain.es is a maildir, and that
it is also the home directory for domain.es mail, according to your
control/virtualdomains and users/assign.

&[EMAIL PROTECTED] will, as you say, loop. You don't want to deliver the
mail to that *address*; you're already doing that. Instead, you want
to deliver it to the *maildir*. Change the &[EMAIL PROTECTED] line to:
/var/spool/queue/domain.es/

Hi All,
I am a newbie to linux and qmail (it couldnt go any worse!), but even after
seeing numerous posts on the topic, I still couldnt configure my qmail.
1. Installed qmail according to instructions by DBJ.
2. I now want support for multiple domains, so I followed the instructions by
PG. Here is what I have now:-
/var/qmail/control/virtualdomains :
zoot.com:zoot-com
/var/qmail/control/rcpthosts :
proton.com zoot.com
(/var/qmail/control/locals does not contain zoot.com)
/var/qmail/users/assign :
=3Dzoot-com-joe:popuser:510:503:/home/popuser/popboxes/zoot-com/joe
where 510 is the UID and 503 is the GID of system user popuser.
/var/qmail/users/poppasswd :
joe:xxxx:popuser:/home/popuser/popboxes/zoot-com/joe
/home/popuser/popboxes/zoot-com/joe/.qmail :
./Maildir/
/etc/inetd.conf :
pop3 stream tcp nowait root /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup
qmail-popup zoot.com /bin/checkpoppasswd /var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir
Now the problem is, when i try to POP mails using Microsoft Outlook Express or
even telnet, it gives me "-ERR authentication failure".
1. I use PG's mkpasswd.pl to generate the password. Once again the question is
what seed do i specify? If i dont specify any, then checkpoppasswd takes the
first two characters as seed, right? But it doesnt work!
2. Do I need to have a new line for in /etc/inetd.conf for each domain that I
support?
3. Is there a single document (is that asking too much?) that specifies the
intricacies involved with installing qmail and other patches?
TIA,
Manavendra Gupta.

No, you can't bind to the same port more than once.

As I said... locals is trusted for local domains. If you're sending to "newsguy.com"
and that is a local domain, put it into control/locals.

Maybe I'm missing something here. I tried to make it as clear as I
could as to the local setup. Reiterated here for clarity:
Local machine LAPTOP (satellite.local.lan) (on home network)
Connected to desktop by ethernet and IP masquerade access to
internet.
Local machine DESKTOP (reader.local.lan) (on home network)
connected by ethernet to LAPTOP. Connected by ethernet-DSL on a separate
NIC to ISP provider (networkone.net) (NOT on local network)
Main mailbox is on the COMMERCIAL provider newsguy.com (NOT on local network)
Running the qmail LOCAL-LOCAL test. That is, testing LOCAL only delivery.
`echo to: reader | /var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject'
This message is not delivered locally although `reader' is a luser.
Instead it is delivered to the main mailserver (NOT on local network)
newsguy.com.

How can I deliver to local mbox's without going through a REMOTE host?
Adding satellite.local.lan to /var/qmail/control/locals Does not help.
I'm using the /var/qmail/doc/TEST.deliver (LOCAL-LOCAL test).. IE to
inject mail directly to a ~/Mailbox without sending through a remote host.
Try this from the qmail source directory:
# ./config-fast satellite.local.lan
and see if that fixes it.

It won't. I've just realized what's going on... it's his "defaulthost". It gets
appended to any address without a domain by qmail-inject. Including the one he's
testing with. Since his default "domainless" addresses match a remote domain, it'll
deliver remotely.
On the other hand... "defaultdomain" isn't appended to "domainless" addresses, just to
dotless hosts. So... Harry, try renaming your defaulthost file to "defaultdomain".
That should do it.

Urgh... an old lesson I should have learned... Don't try to solve problems when
sleepy. Sorry.
Using defaultdomain instead of defaulthost will solve the local delivery problem, but
will mess up with the "masquerading" of outgoing mails. I can't think of anything
that'll get both things functional. Any clues, anyone?

Above technique also fails, but apparently needs a .dot-forward file
in place.

A further question: I had the `defaulthost' file in place before above
experiment, because the qmail FAQ says that is the way to masquerade
your `From' address.
FAQ:
1.1. How do I set up host masquerading? All the users on this host,
zippy.af.mil, are users on af.mil. When joe sends a message to fred, the
message should say ``From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]'' and ``To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]'', without
``zippy'' anywhere.
Answer: echo af.mil > /var/qmail/control/defaulthost; chmod 644
/var/qmail/control/defaulthost.
Trying your suggestion above still doesn't deliver direct to a luser,
but does have the effect that mail sent to a remote host now fails.
`echo to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | /var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject':

So still the question remains, how to masquerade the HOST name of my
main mail server and be able to deliver to lusers directly.

local-user@localhost (where localhost is a domain name with an A
record to 127.0.0.1---localhost has to be listed in control/locals).
See http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/jargon/html/entry/luser.html for a
definition of ``luser'': I don't think it stands for ``local user''.

I must add, masquerading is only applicable if you can always replace
your host name with that of the masqueraded one.
e.g., I run a host called arcanum.m.org.nz. I can masquerade as
m.org.nz, since m.org.nz has an MX record pointing to arcanum, and
m.org.nz is listed in control/locals. For all intents and purposes,
arcanum is identical to m.org.nz.
However, I doubt your userlist will match that of newsguy.com. So
I think you shouldn't masquerade at all. If you want your From
address to say newsguy.com, just set MAILHOST in your ~/.profile.

What is an A record?

Maybe I should just say `local user', but after reading the comments
at the page you sight several times, and eventhough the first line
says it means the same as `loser'. The whole rest of the dialog there
seems to indicate that in fact it does mean `local user'.

That is true... And I may be confusing something here. I've only
recently installed and experimented with qmail, having run only
`sendmail' in the past. To make sendmail work, I had to masquerade
the newsguy.com domain, and masquerade the Envelope as newsguy.com as
well.
Further I also had to list my local ISP s mail machine
(mail.networkone.net)as SMART_HOST or relaying would be denied.
I assumed these things would need to be done with qmail as well,
although perhaps differently.
Trying out your suggestion and setting MAILHOST=newsguy.com in
~/.bash_profile, and removing the /var/qmail/defaulthost file, my
mail is not being sent now.

No, it's rejecting your envelope sender.
! How can I correct this without masquerading newsguy.com?
Set the envelope sender to something the outside world can see.
3 ways to do that, all outlined in the qmail-inject manual page:
1. set QMAILSUSER and QMAILSHOST
2. use the -f option
3. put a Return-Path field in your message header
Personally, I use the first option, since that doesn't rely on the
good graces of my mail client.
In case you wonder what the difference between the header sender
(i.e., your From field) and the envelope sender is, the header sender
is used for replies (unless overridden by Reply-To or Mail-Reply-To),
and the envelope sender is used for bounces &c. They can be the same
address, but they don't have to be.

Relaying? I always send direct to the target MX, without going through
my ISP (i.e., no smart host).
Perhaps you mean that some of your target MXs use dial-up users lists,
which block all IP addresses known to be dynamically-allocated. Feel
free to send a test message to [EMAIL PROTECTED], its MX is a machine

You can masquerade, as you realised. You can also use smart hosts,

! What is an A record?
An A record in DNS maps a domain name to an IPv4 address. If you have

But that *doesn't* make sure you'll hit them all. If you want to hit
them all, *start* at a random one, and then try them *in order*,
wrapping back to the beginning when you hit the end, and stop when you
come back to where you started.

There seems to be some confusion lately about understanding how an MTA
works.
Anything that is in a users Maildir is a delivered email, not in the queue.
The queue is messages that are waiting to be delivered and are usually
/var/qmail/queue
To answer the poorly phrased question:
If you want to move messages that have been delivered, just move them to the
new location and make sure that the user owns the files and that's it.

The new location is on another (non-qmail) server. Basically this user is
wanting her currently delivered email to be send to the other email
address (the one I put in her .qmail). I'm not sure if it's called
requeuing or what but basically I want qmail to re-process the delivered
mail according to the new .qmail file.

How I would do it is to fire up mutt (cd ~user; mutt -f Maildir) then
bounce (aka resend) the messages to her new address. Delete them
after confirming delivery.
If you don't have an MUA that does Maildir, perhaps something
like the following:
for mess in *; do /var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject [EMAIL PROTECTED] < $mess; done
Aaron
#!/bin/sh
cd usermaildir/Maildir;
ls new > filelist;
exec < filelist

do
echo $line;
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject -a [EMAIL PROTECTED] < new/$line;
done;

If the messages have already been delivered to a Maildir then you
need not run them back though qmail. Just move (mv) the messages to
the new user's ~/Maildir/new directory, and do a chown to change
their ownership. Assuming users olduser and newuser:
chown newuser.users ~olduser/Maildir/new/*
mv ~olduser/Maildir/new/* ~newuser/Maildir/new

Hello:
I'm currently administering a site running majordomo 1.94.5 and
sendmail 8.9.3 with the DRACD POP before SMTP hack to allow users to
send mail from anywhere they are on the net. We have several virtual
domains as well.
My questions are these:
1) What would be the process to convert from sendmail 8.9.3 to qmail?
2) Does qmail have a facility to allow the authorization I mention
above while still being safe from the "open relay" problem and
allowing us to use RBL as well?
3) How does this integrate with Majordomo since we have 20+ lists
running and I don't wish to break these or the majorcool web admin
interface.
4) Are there any other gotchas I should be aware of in conversion
(problems with Apache web server running frontpage 2000 extensions,
etc)?
5) Anyone willing to do this conversion for us for a reasonable fee,
since I'm by no means a sendmail or qmail expert and cannot afford to
have the system broken while converting it.....
Thank you,

Yes. Bruce Guenter, for one, has written realy-control, a POP-before-SMTP
relay control option. It works well, and transparently.

There are several commercial qmail consultants who can do this; some are
listed on the www.qmail.org page. Russell Nelson, a member of this list,
does qmail consultation.

****following is the text of Keith's questions...
I am wondering if anyone is running FreeBSD 4.0-RELEASE in an NFS-heavy
environment and is noticing performance issues with NFS, or has any tips
on how to tune NFS in the kernel. There are currently 6 identical servers
that we are running FreeBSD on, though they were installed at different
times so some servers are running FreeBSD 3.2-RELEASE, one FreeBSD
3.3-RELEASE, and one FreeBSD 4.0-RELEASE. The machine that is running
FreeBSD 4.0-RELEASE is noticably slower then the other boxes, and thus
handles a lesser amount of email, even though they all have the same
hardware configuration: Dual PIII 600Mhz, 512mb ram, 9.1gb IBM LVD SCSI
system disk, two Intel 100BaseT NICs (it's a server motherboard, so one of
them is integrated). I have 5 more servers that are setup with FreeBSD
4.0 that I want to put into place, but need to figure out what could be
going on to cause this decrease in performance. These boxes are all
running qmail.
The machines are NFS mounting the mail spool directories off of an EMC
Celerra on a dedicated NIC. The other interface is connected to the
outside world where the servers are load balanced behind an Alteon Ace.
Sometimes just a 'df' will take 10-15 seconds to run unless given the -n
switch so it does not try to get new state information.
It's not the backend Celerra since the FreeBSD 3.2 and 3.3 boxes are
running fine, and we have a number of Sun servers attached to the Celerra
as well, with no problems to report. A message that pops up in the
messages file every once and awhile is:
Jul 21 14:17:03 host /kernel: got bad cookie vp 0xdcc3d840 bp 0xcd03f6a0
Jul 21 14:17:03 host /kernel: got bad cookie vp 0xdcc3d840 bp 0xcd03f6a0
Jul 21 14:17:05 host /kernel: got bad cookie vp 0xdcc3d840 bp 0xcd040600
Jul 21 14:17:05 host /kernel: got bad cookie vp 0xdcc3d840 bp 0xcd040600
Jul 21 14:17:07 host /kernel: got bad cookie vp 0xdcc3d840 bp 0xcd040890
But, I am not sure what this error message means. I included it because it
*might* have something to do with the problem, and wanted to include
everything I had hoping that someone might have seen this problem before.
My kernel configuration is pretty basic. I enable SMP, disable
I386,486,586 support in the kernel, turn maxusers up to 256, disable USB
support, and recompile the kernel. Nothing fancy on any of the boxes. It
is what someone had configured one of ther boxes, and I just kept it the
same across the board.
qmail is accepting the mail and writing it to the queue, but it never gets
a chance to delivery the email to the NFS-mounted mail spool directories.
For instance, we received couple thousand email messages for usernames
that started with 'b', and these messages piled up on the FreeBSD 4.0
servers, but were delivered immediatly on all of the other machines.
Access to the other partitions mounted off of the same datamover (part of
the Celerra, basically an NFS server) was fine.
Does anyone have any tips or ideas they can pass on to me? I am lost on
what it could be.
Thanks,

OK, I think I have my firewall masquerading the firewall external IP port 25
to the qmail box internal IP port 25
I'm getting connection rejects, when I try to telnet to port 25 on the
firewall. This should redirect me to port 25 on the qmail box, right?
I'm not sure that it's the qmail box that's causing the problem, but is there
anything I need to do to allow smtp connections from the internet?

Does anybody else get this bounceback when posting to this qmail list? I get
it for EVERY e-mail I send to here! And I'm not bcc'ing or cc'ing to this or
any other user... Whichever gateway is having trouble here is also probably
defying a few internet standards by the incorrect use of a nonexistant FQDN,
wouldn't you say?

Yeah, I've gotten about 10 of these. I put them into my RBL

'Course now his mailer is constantly beating on mine trying
unsuccessfully to deliver all those bounces. I hope this

Dear Qmail Guru's
I am wanting to migrate for an NTMail (dont buy it, (I didnt it was already
here) ) mail server, to qmail as I run qmail extensively throughout the
organisation but I am wondering how I would go about transfering the mail in
the in the form below, back into a qmail queue so that I can deliver it to
the users when we make the changeover... I have 1500 users connecting to
this particular server so I cannot afford to get them to log in and collect
their mail while I change over!
The 2 Files are below... has anyone had to do this... do did you do it is it
opossible to migrate etc..... Please help me

Hi,
The document for Installing QMail and REMOVING Sendmail stated that:
15. Make qmail's ``sendmail'' wrapper available to MUAs:
# ln -s /var/qmail/bin/sendmail /usr/lib/sendmail
# ln -s /var/qmail/bin/sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail
but before this step /usr/sbin/sendmail is moved as
/usr/sbin/sendmail.bak !!! So, what is the use of linking qmail's
sendmail with actual non-existing sendmail executable?
Reply asap,
n'x,
Anand

you are making a SYMBOLIC LINK. the executable /var/qmail/bin/sendmail
does exist. you are disabling the 'old' sendmail, but enabling
the new qmail one... type "man ln" for more info on this.

When you move /usr/sbin/sendmail to *.bak, you are taking the actual
original "sendmail" program out of action. But you may have many other
perl/... scripts as well as shell users that have the sendmail command
embedded in them. So the best way to accommodate them in your move to a
qmail system is to provide a wrapper called sendmail that dumps their
stuff into the qmail system (using qmail-inject??? dunno still a qmail
newbie). So you make those symbolic links so that if some script or user
calls sendmail or /usr/sbin/sendmail or /usr/lib/sendmail, they in
reality call the qmail wrapper.

I had configured my server with mail.xyz.com domain with qmail running I want this
server to collect the mails for another domain i.e. say abc.com and forward it to
another server on my local internal server for this i had put abc.com in
/var/qmail/control/smtproutes
abc.com:<ipaddress of local server>
now if test this my sending my mail from this server to the domain at abc.com it
forwards the mail to the server specfied in the smtptoutes file also it i check with
my another host in the network say (proxy.xyz.com) with the relay server as my main
server(mail.xyz.com) to the [EMAIL PROTECTED] it also sends the mail to the server in local
lan. I had doubt if I map the ipaddress of my domain(abc.com) to the ip of the
mail.xyz.com so as to receive the mail for abc.com will it receive the mail for both
xyz.com ( which it store or forward to host with MX entry ) and abc.com ( forwarded to
host specified in smtproutes).

Kamal,
It's virtualdomains (not virtualdomain) you want, and this is in
/var/qmail/control (not /var/qmail). /etc/aliases has nothing
to do with qmail. You haven't detailed your mailbox structure,
but typically, once you've setup virtualdomains, add a file
.qmail-default to <user1>'s home directory, containing
delivery instructions, such as
./Maildir/
assuming you've got a Maildir setup for the user (maildirmake)...
If you haven't read it yet, checkout Dave Sill's Life with qmail,
which is an excellent qmail primer - web.infoave.net/~dsill/lwq.html.
cheers,
Andrew.

Of course, if you're coming from a sendmail background and enjoy the use of
a centralised aliases file and a few (IMHO) nice options that are available,
then try out fastforward, the sendmail aliases 'wrapper' for qmail. It makes
virtual domains pretty easy to handle as well. Take a look

Hi there,
How can I add additional date info to multilog file ?
For example,
I use
#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/local/bin/setuidgid qmaill /usr/local/bin/multilog t s5000000 n20
/var/log/qmail/qmail-smtpd
for logging of qmail-smtpd.
I would like to turn @40000000397ffff536de9f8c status: local 0/10 remote 0/100
to become
@40000000397ffff536de9f8c [Date Time in human readable format] status: local 0/10
remote 0/100
Regards,
Edward.
Well, its not a very standard thing to do, but try a quick mod of tai64nfrac
or similar. Shouldn't be too hard to do... Just pipe the logs through that,
or even mod multilog so that the current date-writing code just also adds
your own date format to it. I'm no hardcore programmer but from my
experience, it shouldn't be too hard to do...
