Does /var/qmail/queue/lock/trigger look like this?

bash# ls -al /var/qmail/queue/lock/trigger
prw--w--w-  1 qmails  qmail  0 May 17 14:41 /var/qmail/queue/lock/trigger

You should consider multilog (from djb's daemontools) instead of syslog.
