Hi all,

qmail generell is running good.

My current problem seems to be the fact, that mails send to
@mail.<domain> are accepted, but those send to @<domain> not.

Who can give me tips to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Thomas

It's good exercise anyway; you should try it. See
<http://www.pobox.com/~lbudney/linux/security/telnet-tcpserver.html> for
a worked-out example: running telnet under tcpserver.

I know almost nothing about linux and less about qmail. I have installed it
and it works with one mailbox. Can any of you please tell me how to add
users to my qmail linux and qmail at the same time?

Thanks,

Bolivar,

OK. Thanks. But I have one question more. How many messages will be saved
on backup MX host ? And how long backup MX host store it in queue ?

As many will fit on your disk partition that contains /var/qmail/queue.
In other words you are only limited by the size
of your disk.

> And how long backup MX host store it in queue ?

By default messages are stored for 1 week (604800 seconds).
To change this value create the queuelifetime file in
/var/qmail/control. For example to decrease the maximumu time
in the queue to 1 day:

        echo 86400 > /var/qmail/control/queuelifetime

After making this change you _must_ stop and start qmail-send
in order for the new parameters to take effect.

Hi All,

Does something like a group e-mail exist in qmail, example

        group is sports

        in sports group is:

        larry, mike, pete, greg

so sending an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] would deliver to
        all of those people...

is this something handled on the client end, or with qmail

Mail User Agents are Eudora Light, Netscape Mail, and Outlook
Express (all receive their accounts on 95/98/NT machines)

Could be handled by qmail, definately (at least IMHO) not by a MUA, or you could
create distribution lists in outlook....
Don't know about Eudora or Netscape.
But this is rather cumbersome.

What you're describing here is, in fact, a mailing list ;-)
There's a program called ezmlm (easy mailing list manager) which handles these things
'automagically' once it's properly set up (which is rather easy if you follow the docs)
An alternative could be majordomo, etc...

If it's a static list which never changes i imagine it's possible to use a
.qmail-sports or something for this.

   Hi All,

Does something like a group e-mail exist in qmail, example

           group is sports

           in sports group is:

           larry, mike, pete, greg

The conventional term is "mailing list" or "distribution list."

so sending an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] would deliver to
           all of those people...

Put their addresses in ~alias/.qmail-sports, one per line. For further
details, do "man dot-qmail". Note that this allows anyone on the planet
to send to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

is this something handled on the client end, or with qmail

Could be either. Or neither; for large lists, mailing list management
programs such as ezmlm (see http://www.ezmlm.org/) are more robust and
easier to maintain.

Bill Parker writes:

No, but you could create ~alias/.qmail-group-default, then you could
send mail to group-sports, like this:

|perl -e 'exec "forward ".((getgrnam($ENV{EXT2}))[3]);'

Hello.

I want to run a second mail server.

I'm curious of how you do this.

I know about the MX, but if the accounts are on the primary mail server, and it goes
down, how do you ensure the the accounts and mail are duplicated on the second sever.

Does that make sense ?

A secondary MX doesn't function as a secondary pop. It only recieves the
mail and will continually attempt to forward it until the lower priority
smtp server comes back to life.

Pop and SMTP are two different entities.

I am trying to set up qmail for the first time and am having diffuculty with it.

Every time I start qmail this appears in the log.

"Unable to switch to home directory"

I went through all the dirs and files and checked permissions and checked the home
dirs in passwd.

TIA.

Maybe asking the obvious, but :
have you tried the script WITHOUT the recordio part ?
and what is $alias_empty filled with ? the first \ in \"$alias_empty\" is treated as a
line continuar isn't it ?

Removed the $alias_empty part and it starts without any errors.

Hi all,

Which file do I have to edit to change the mailer-daemon message like this

At 07:14 PM 4/22/00 +0000, you wrote:
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at 123.def.com.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
Reason for failure:
Unknown local POP user /home/abc/

Thanks,

I installed qmail 1.03 and it works fine on my Digital unix4.0D.

However when I tested my system script starting the qmail at boot:

#!/sbin/sh
  if [ -f /var/qmail/rc ]; then
        /var/qmail/rc &
        echo "Starting qmail server"
        echo "Please wait .........." && /sbin/sleep 5
  else
echo "qmail server could not be started."
  fi

qmail was not started at boot, although the script works when
tried at the command line. (the script was in /.../rc3.d)

Any hint?

BTW, I am new so I am not on your list yet. Please reply to me
directly -- Thanks!!

I run a virtual qmail system with many virtual domains. Generally, there
have been no problems untill we ddecided to send email to hotmail.com.

I use a combination of sqwebmail, and vchkpw in combination with qmail.

I kept seeing error 554 in communication with hotmail. Upon sniffing the
connection I saw that qmail was saying "HELO localhost" instead of "HELO
<virtual host>" or at least "HELO <statically set hostname>".

Does anyone know how to either hardcode the HELO msg's or have it take the
host name from the "From:" field in an email?

Thanks!
Alex

See the man page for qmail-remote:

CONTROL FILES
     helohost
Current host name, for use solely in saying hello to the remote
SMTP server. Default: me, if that is supplied; otherwise
          qmail-remote refuses to run.

Thank you! This has fixed my problem. Is there a way to put in virtual
hosts into helohost? Though this isn't very important!

Thanks!
Alex
