There are no "differences" : the the two programs are
working together : vmailmgrd is a replacement for checkpassword, and
also use qmail-pop3d.

If you have specific vmailmgr questions, there is also a mailing
list (look on http://www.em.ca/~bruceg/vmailmgr/ )

* with qmail-pop3d and checkpassword, you have one pop-mail account
per unix user.

* with qmail-pop3d and vmailmgrd, you need only one unix account
per domain (so many pop accounts as you need)

* and with vpopmail, you only need one unix account for all your pop-mail
accounts.

I used qmail-qsanity and there were some problems with the gids and the
uids. I tried to clean this up. But now I get the following messages:

message is neither local nor remote: 376
message is neither local nor remote: 358
message is neither local nor remote: 359
message is neither local nor remote: 369
message is neither local nor remote: 379
message is neither local nor remote: 600

when I try to send a message to the server I get:
451 qq trouble vreating files in queue (#4.3.0)'.
qstat says:
messages in queue: 25
messages in queue but not yet preprocessed: 0

I think I made a fault while changing the gids and the uids. Is there a
way
to clean the queue and a list of directories with their gids and uids?

qmail-send will clean these out eventually.

Try running "make check" from the source directory.

The problem isan't the authentication by Mysql.

The problem is that when a mail is recieved on host, qmail check /etc/passwd at first.
If no user on /etc/passwd, qmail search Mysql database for use name.
If qmail find the username on Mysql, it send the mail to under the directory that you
set mysql 'home' filed.

I would like that the Qmail not looked for user on /etc/passwd. I would like that it
I looked on Mysql without passing for /etc/passwd

The qmail functions in this mode:

                     smtp, pop3
                            |
                    | found
                       /etc/passwd  ----------------->   ~user/Maildir
                            |
                    | not found
                    |
                        Mysql

I would like it functions in this mode:

                     smtp, pop3
                            |
                    |
                            |
                        Mysql

Which patches have you applied to qmail. Because djb's qmail source
code does not check mysql.

> If no user on /etc/passwd, qmail search Mysql database for use name.
This is not part of djb's qmail distribution. What patches to qmail
did you apply?

Why not put your users and domains in /var/qmail/users/assign and
compile
that with qmail-newu into a cdb file. That way you can do whatever you
want for email delivery and not have to worry about patching the qmail
source code.

>From my own experience looking over the qmail source code, there is
almost no reason to patch it. It provides many modular options
to add features without changing the base source code. I prefer to
add small external programs to make my wacky delivery options.

Let's all think about software engineering.

Sorry that was a typo, I _do_ have priorities assigned (
and yes, I do know that a lower number means higher priority).

Its like this:

@ IN MX 5 sendmail.otherdomain.com.
        IN MX 10 qmail.otherdomain.com.

I should also mention that I re-installed sendmail on
the qmail host and secondarying works! IN sendmail,
I made sure that the domains were not in $=w (sendmail.cw)
and put them in relay-domains only, and everything
works nicely. I'm sure my problem is a minor configuration
error with qmail.

You need to trust us with the real name of your domain. Since qmail
does the right thing with the right MX records in place, the problem
must be in your DNS configuration. It might also help to include the
output of qmail-showctl.

Go and shoot the people who crippled your linux system by not installing
the complete development packages (in this case kernel-headers is missing,
in case you use redhat linux).
Then go and shoot the makers of your distribution for not getting their
compiler dependencies right.

We're using Linux Mandrake 6.0., and found out that kernel-headers is
installed. What other packages and compiler dependencies am I lacking?
I did not experienced this kind of error when I installed qmail at Linux
Mandrake 5.3.

Is it possible to allow clients from remote ISP's to access and send
email from my qmail server with out having a wide open relay, and with
out knowing their IP (rotating).

Not comfortably. A good resource for an explanation is the "Newbie's
guide to relaying" (http://www.palomine.net/qmail/relaying.html).

The only decent way is a patch to allow users who have authenticated via
POP3 to use SMTP for a limited time, but educating users to check mail
*before* sending sounds like quite a hastle to me - I simply tell them to
use their ISP's mail server.

steve

So the only way is to have them actually log on to the server to
retrieve mail? Is there a way to protect the server via ipchains or
something else to minimize the spammer risk while still having the open
relay?

Basically I have some very slow computer users who panic at any change.
I would really like it if they could just plug the values into netscape
at home and get their mail from here and reply to it if need be.

Thanks
Shad

The answer is that they should use their ISP's server for sending mail.

This will become more and more necessary as ISP's begin blocking access to
outside mail servers. If you don't tell them this now, you are just going to
have a headache later.

What does your POP3 tcpserver invocation look like (or your line in inetd.conf
if you're using inetd)? Is qmail-popup in there somewhere? Checkpassword? It
doesn't look like it.

Your rite it isn't. I missed that one.

pop-3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd qmail-pop3d

Thats what is in inetd.conf and I have to admit I don't know how to make it
work.
If you could direct me to some doc's that would help.
I used Adam D. McKenna's qmail HOWTO.to setup qmail and Have looked again it
doesn't apper to be in there. I have just found this doc in FAQ from DJB's
site http://cr.yp.to/qmail/faq/servers.html#pop3d I will have a look at that
and try and get it sorted.

Thanks for your help I got lost in doc's Thanks.

I am very great full for your help and now the pop3 server works the first
time.

The only thing I am having trouble with know is the relaying.

I get 553 errors
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by
the server. The rejected e-mail address was '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'.
Subject 'Hello', Account: 'WebMaster Uzzell', Server: 'mail.uzzell.com.au',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of
allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553,
Error Number: 0x800CCC79

supervise /var/lock/qmail-smtpd tcpserver -v -x
/etc/tcp.smtp.cdb -u$USERID -g$GROUPID 0 25 \

        setuser qmaill cyclog -s5000000 -n5 /var/log/qmail/qmail-smtpd &

Thats what is listed in rc.local and all seems to run execpt relay by
tcp.smtp.cdb

127.0.0.1:allow,RELAYCLIENT=""
203.42.152.:allow,REALYCLIENT=""

thats what is in the tcp.smtp and the .cdb was rebuilt with
tcprules /etc/tcp.smtp.cdb /etc/smtp.tmp < /etc/tcp.smtp

Every thing I read in DJB's FAQ's about selected realying.

I have this time looked around and supplied all the information that I think
would be revelant.

Can some one point me in the correct direction.
Thanks.

You have a typo here. REALYCLIENT should be RELAYCLIENT.

It sounds like they were never successfully queued, so you can
probably ignore them and let qmail clean them out after they're 36
hours old.

This isn't really a qmail problem since ezmlm is what's dumping core.

1) Did you really do "$PATH/qmail start"? That doesn't make sense.

2) "qmail start" starts qmail. It's not a part of the installation
   tests.

3) "env" and "multilog" don't appear in the same script in the LWQ
configuration. "env" is only used in "qmail" and
/var/qmail/rc. "multilog" is only used in
   supervise/qmail-send/log/run and supervise/qmail-smtpd/log/run.

I think you need to go back through LWQ and verify the contents of
your startup scripts.

Posting the output of "sh -x /usr/local/sbin/qmail start" might help,
too.

Put test.com in control/locals and control/rcpthosts. Create a
~alias/.qmail-default that contains:

  |forward "$LOCAL"@serv2.test.com

Or, if you only want to forward certain users to serv2, create a
.qmail for each. E.g., ~alias/.qmail-user:

  &[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Or, use fastforward.

AOL is a bad example because they've got so many users that we can't
really think on that scale. However, fastforward would probably be the
way to go.

Hi,

I'm about to patch ETRN into qmail-1.03, but would like to keep my
existing setup and only install (if possible the patched files). Is the
best way to do this to find all files that have been recently modified
and attempt to install them in th4 correct place or is there a cleaner
route?

Cheers,

Del.

I am not sure what you are asking but if I understand correctly try
this.....

It would make sence to have more than one NIC in your computer if you
were setting it up as a firewall. If you are hosting more than one
domain on that computer it would make more sence you use IP Aliasing and
create sub interfaces off of that one NIC.

Lets say your primary domain is 192.168.0.4 and the Secondary is
192.168.0.5. For this example we will assume that eth0 is already
configured for 192.168.0.4. With Linux Kernal 2.2.12-20 you can do the
following...

/sbin/ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.0.5
/sbin/route -add host 192.168.0.5 dev eth0:1

This will map the second IP to the Network card as the first. You would
setup your DNS the same way you would setup any other SOA record for
thier respective IP's.

I have been going through LWQ trying to setup an Internet Mail server. I
have done everthing in LWQ through section 2.8.2 System start-up files. But
this is the output I get when I run "sh -x /usr/local/sbin/qmail start"

Beats me. Looks like "sh" is something strange (csh?). What do:

    type sh
    help|head -1

Say?

How about:

    bash -x /usr/local/sbin/qmail start

?

[EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote on Wed, 22 Mar 2000:

This might be a garbled error message that you get when the shell script
has bad EOL chars (eg. Windows-style CR LF, instead of the unix LF
only). You get CR in the error message as the last char of the command
it tried to execute, or the last char of the variable, or whatever. And
when printed, the cursor goes to the beginning of the line and the
subsequent ": command not found" overwrites the beginning of the line...

Check the line endings in the shell script, I'm guessing you've imported
it from a Windows system it's got CR LF endings when it should have only
LF.

Hope this helps,

Ok I believe the $ in the export command corrected the problem with my qmail
script. When I execute # sh -x /usr/local/sbin/qmail start I get the
following output.

+ PATH=/var/qmail/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin
+ export /var/qmail/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin
export: /var/qmail/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin: not a legal variable

+ env - PATH=/var/qmail/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin svscan
+ echo 23844
+ echo .
.
+ exit 0

The "not a legal variable name" on the export line still worries me. Why is
it telling me that? Is the script still not correct? All of the qmail
processes seem to be running. Below is the out from "ps-ef|grep qmail".
Aren't all the processes listed here?

root 23845 23844 0 18:04 pts/0 00:00:00 supervise qmail-send

root 14162 588 0 18:10 pts/0 00:00:00 grep qmail

Also, I am still having one major problem. Qmail does not start when the
system boots up. I have completed all the tasks in section 2.8 of LWQ. But
qmail still doesn't start on boot up. What am I doing wrong or what have I
missed?

Missed it by *that* much! You need a '$' in front of PATH
on your export command.

I can't tell for sure without seeing your script, however I'm guessing
you have "export $PATH" in your script, where it should be
"export PATH". By including the $, the PATH environment variable gets
expanded *before* the export command sees it, and so it's trying to
export a variable which name is the contents of the PATH variable.
This is not how it should work, of course. :-) If you have it written
as $PATH, get rid of the $ (this is on the line with the export
command).

In fact this does not affect the startup of qmail at all apart from the
error getting displayed, because the PATH variable gets reset properly
with the env-command just a little later, when svscan is started. So
svscan gets the proper path. (Probably.)

I still think that the original error you had was a stray ^M (CR)
character at the export command line, like this: "export PATH^M", so
export complained it couldn't find a variable called "PATH^M". You're
*not* supposed to have a $ in front of the variable when doing export.

No you don't. You're required to accept empty envelope senders. That's how
bounces are sent.

That's a very bad idea. Bounces have that return path. Rejecting them
will violate the protocol and prevent you from receiving bounces.

Can't do it using badmailfrom.

Do NOT block mail with a return path of <>. These are error messages and
RFC 821 and 1123 require you to accept these messages. This is the ONLY

And anyone who how to block a <> sender with badmailfrom?

Regards, Chris.

I was wondering how others are handling this.

For instance, say I have virtualdomains with:
mydomain.com:test

Then in ~test/.qmail-mylist:
validname1
validname2
bogusname

On my system, bounces from the above scenario get directed to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and require the file
.qmail-test-mylist-owner to contain bounce mailing instructions, as
opposed to what I would expect (.qmail-mylist-owner).

I'm not sure exactly how the redirection for list bouncing occurs, but
it seems that it is inserting the username before the list-owner name
before delivery.

Has anyone else run into this? Do they solve it by simply using
.qmail-domain-list-owner files? (seems redundant). Or do I have
something set up wrong?

Can't seem to figure out why qmail is looking for aliases under /usr

Here's the error message from syslog
Mar 22 21:27:06 lightning qmail: 953782026.825182 delivery 32: deferral:
Unable_to_switch_to_/usr/qmail/alias: file_does_not_exist._(#4.3.0)/

I compiled qmail in the default /var/qmail path. And yes, there is a
/var/qmail/alias dir, but for the life of me I can't find where qmail is
getting /usr/qmail from.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Check your /etc/passwd file, the home directory for the alias user is
probably incorrect.

What address is it trying to deliver to? What do the previous log entries say for
delivery number 32?

Chris

Check out the archives. I posted numerous documents on this matter over the
last couple of years. There is also a reference to a modified rmail program
on www.qmail.org. What did you make of that?

Regards.

I'm trying to setup a robot sending mail to a mailing list using ezmlm-idx
and I've come across a very wierd problem. The robot sends a header that
I cannot change... it sends an Errors-To: header which contains
[EMAIL PROTECTED] The subscribed email address is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and the From: header contains it but Qmail is
bouncing the mail anyways (or ezmlm is?) because it thinks it's coming
from the errors- address. Below is a copy of the bounce message. Does
anyone know how I can fix this so that Qmail/ezmlm (whichever is at fault,
tho looking at the qmail logs it looks like qmail is mis-interpretting
things) will accept the mail? Or perhaps it's the Return-Path header
that's causing the problem? I can't change the robot software to exclude
any of these headers so I definately need a fix I can apply to
qmail/ezmlm. Any suggestions?

Hello !

I'm realy new with qmail - but what I know it's damn fast......
Could You help me with resolve problem?

I'm using: RedHat 6.0 box & qmail 1.03 under tcp supervised server &
trying vpopmail-3.4.11.relased.tar.gz from www.inter7.com site.
qmail was great working with /etc/rc.d/init.d/qmail-pop3d.init script
where invocation of
qmail-popup was:
<cut> qmail-popup $HOST $CHKPASS $COMMAND Maildir <cut> where:
HOST=host.domain
CHKPASS="/home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw"
COMMAND=qmail-pop3d

When I want check my mail via Outlook or Mozilla, the -aack error apear.
All works fine with checkpassword & real /etc/passwd users.

What I forgot? Maybe something during compilation of vpopmail? I know in
/home/vpopmail/domains/caspol.com.pl there are 3 files: .vpasswd.lock,
vpasswd & vpasswd.cdb
Maybe is somethin corrupted?
My configuration before make install-strip was: ./configure
--enable-tcpserver-file=/etc/tcprules.d/qmail-smtpd.cdb
--enable-default-domain=caspol.com.pl --enable-ip-alias-domains=y
--enable-hardquota=20m

PLEASE help me... I was looking at all known mail lists and couldn't
find any clue...
