cnames aren't proper for virtual email addresses; you need an actual A
or MX record for them. (multiple A records pointing to the same IP
are perfectly legal).

Once the DNS is properly setup, then what you need is, as you've
figured out, virtual domains. The virtualdomains file goes in qmail's
control directory (which might be at the path you give, or other
paths, depending how you installed it). You also need to add those
domains to rcpthosts. You should *never* add a domain to both
virtualdomains and locals.

This is pretty well described in "Life With Qmail"
http://web.infoave.net/~dsill/lwq.html and in the qmail FAQ that comes
with the distribution. (Is this on the web somewhere, people? I
couldn't find it right off, anyway).
