qmail-popup without maildir

Is it possible to use qmail-popup without using the Maildir format?  I
am trying to use $HOME/Mailbox for mail and gather my remotely via
POP-3, but I keep getting the message:

Could not connect to mail.bluejava.com (my domain)
-ERR this user has no $HOME/Maildir

Any ideas?
