Hello everyone,
I have been fighting with qmail-scanner for the last couple of weeks
trying to track down an issue I am having. It seems that randomly (about
every 24 hours, but often less than 1 or greater than 48) the mail system
comes crashing down causing messages to repeatedly requeue. With the queue
filling up but nothing getting delivered, the load averages on the box
skyrocket to about 800.
My maillog will be filled with:
Oct 11 15:19:06 rapids X-Qmail-Scanner-2.01: [rapids116059287054014729]
Requeuing: Maximum time exceeded. Something cannot handle this message.
at /var/qmail/bin/qmail-scanner-queue.pl line 441.
No other error messages seem to precede this one, however both spamd and clamd
will report error messages or crash once the load averages skyrocket. I
suspect this is a symptom of the problem and not the cause.
The system handles a fairly large amount of mail, with normal load averages
hovering between 0.05 and 2. I am running:
Athlon 64 3000+ w/1 GB of RAM
Qmail-Scanner is 2.01 (lastest version)
clamd is ClamAV 0.88.4/1997/Wed Oct 4 11:20:43 2006 (latest)
SpamAssassin Server version 3.1.6 (latest) (10 children, -round-robin without
bayes)
I have googled around this problem finding many people with similar issues but
none of their fixes seem to solve my problem.
Strangely, when the server's load averages skyrockets I only need to kill
inetd for about 10 minutes and then start it again for everything to return
to normal. No other daemons (like spamd or clamd) need to be restarted.
Yes, this is implementation is using inetd. tcpserver drives me bonkers.
Any ideas are welcome,
