Hi,

Firstly apologies if this is totally the wrong list, wrong place, or if the
problem doesn't below to SpamAssassin

I'm at a loss to see what is going on here and hoping for some help or
pointers in the right direction.

For the past few months, I have been receiving the odd duplicated email and
thought it was a problem at the SMTP end, (and it might well be..but).

Then last week, I started seeing blocks of repeated emails coming in for an
hour and then they would stop. In that our, there would be about 4-5 copies
of the same mail, with the only difference between the milliseconds
following the 228.

This looked like some sort of timeout issue (though 228 is a bit of a weird
number, 240 I could understand, and the odd difference in milliseconds is
just down to system load/response etc etc).

Anyway, every mail that is duplicated has a processing time of 228.xxxxx
seconds.

Up until Friday it was only a few emails of two types, one containing a fair
few links, and the other cron emailings of site logs from various servers
(all originating from different sources).
Friday I reported a spoof to eBay and my mailbox has been going mental since
then. I am getting 4 mails every 2-4 minutes from them, all the same
header, all apart from the qmail processing time and time of processing.
All are 228seconds + the odd millisecond difference again.

I would like to say for sure that this has only been since the 1.25st
update, but I am sure I have been having the odd duplicate since before
then.

Having searched the archives, I found what maybe a few similar problems, but
nothing exact.

I have tried creating emails of similar format (lots of links, large
attachments), I have even forwarded the emails bouncing to the same email
server from a different account, but none reproduce the action.

The other two sources both seem to stop after a period.
The eBay one is a persistant little sod and is still going.

Two of the SMTP owners are insisting that they only have a record of them
sending the mail once... (I am not convinced, but I can't access their logs
and they either don't know how, or won't send..can't blame them really).
The other (eBay doesn't even acknowledge I exist... No change there then).

I am trying to find a way to track down the root cause of this, and don't
have a clue where to start.

What I 'believe' to be happening is that there is a timeout setting
somewhere of 228seconds (or close). The mail is still being forwarded on to
the end user as scanned, but the SMTP server is being told that the mail
delivery failed, and is attempting a resend.
Some email servers are dying after a certain time (too many failed
attempts), eBay just keep on sending.

Despite what the other two SMTP owners are saying, there is no mail hanging
on the incoming server, I would have to say that they must be sending it.

The main problem is that this is on an shared hosted webserver and they are
not exactly speedy when it comes to looking at problems. It's old customer
account I have yet to move to a dedicated server yet.

If anyone could offer any suggestions as a way forward (and ditching said
hosting company is not an option..yet).

I have asked them to look at the settings for

Timeoutconnect, timeoutremote and timeoutsmtpd, but I may as well be speaking
in an offworld language.
>From looking at the docs, those would be my best guess.

Are there any logs I can ask them to check for timeout / error messages?
