It'd be easier to just stop perl using Unicode - as you imply - it was
broken in older 5.8 series.

Put "export LANG=C" at the top of your qmail-smtpd startup script and
restart, and then when Qmail-Scanner is called it will use ASCII
settings instead of unicode.

BTW: this "unicode support" has nothing directly to do with Q-S - it's
just issues within perl cause those warning. i.e. you won't lose any
functionality by doing this.
