They did!!!  It turned out that softlimit was set too low.  Not
sure why it wasn't giving me errors in the logs... but the
problem is solved.

It also turned out to be a blessing in disguise... after I
realized I was swapping, I went digging in the trash closet -- my
neighbor's kid gave me an old computer to use for parts after the
hard drive and video crashed and it had a memory card of the
right type.  So now I'm not swapping at all!!!
