Run over to www.qmailrocks.org - poke through the slackware installation. That should help.
One thing I found I had to do is once I installed qmail-scanner, I HAD to chown -R qscand.qscand /var/spool/qmailscan. (that's the user/group I'm using) . As for clamav, my clamav.conf file has qscand listed as 'user to run as'..
