Indeed - this is a serious issue for some AVs.

Some AVs never clean up after themselves. So over time you end up with
dozens if not hundreds of pattern files, which *ALL* get read every time the
AV scanner starts - hense making them extremely slow.

So two things can be done:

1. complain to the AV vendor. Please.

2. delete old patterns. I can't tell you how to know if one is old - that's
   dependent on the product of course. I do know that Sophos spits out a
   warning for every pattern file that has now been incorporated into the
   latest engine release - so they do the job correctly.
