I think you will find that if you use clamdscan and run clamd you will 
be a lot happier with the results.

I am using qmail-scanner, spamassassin and clamav. I disabled all the 
dns, rbl and razor checks in spamassassin and I am using clamd and 
clamdscan. I am processing incoming mails in less than 3 seconds, usually
less than 1 second.
