I believe it's the "-u" option.
httpd --help doesn't show any -u option.

The error in the example you gave is caused by running Apache in a CHROOT environment. OpenBSD Distributions after 3.2 I believe come with Apache CHROOT'd by default. The Apache can be brought up without CHROOT by using the -h option in the startup script.

Well I'm using RH 7.3 linux and not OpenBSD. I also have :
User nobody Group nobody
in my httpd.conf. Any ideas what else could be wrong?
