I now have qmail-scanner / sophie / qmail working like a champ for incoming mail.
What is the best way to scan outbound mail (originating from remote users on the network for which qmail relays)?
It depends on /etc/tcp.smtp configuration. Set QMAILQUEUE environment variable for this particular subnet. For example if your subnet is 192.168.x.x put a line like this:
192.168.:allow,RBLSMTPD="",RELAYCLIENT="",QMAILQUEUE="/var/qmail/bin/qmail-scanner-queue.pl"
and all sent mail from 192.168.x.x location will pass qmail-scanner and your sophie antivirus scanner.
BTW: I also wrote a script that scans messages that are already in the maildir using Sophie, if anyone is interested. Takes care of viruses that are already present before installing qmail-scanner, or messages that users copy up to the server via imapd.
