subject ... and I think that on the one 1.20 installation I may have
manually made qmail-scanner-queue.pl be suid qmailq. Sorry if I have
caused confusion.

Shouldn't this tree be owned by the qmailq user?
My system (Qm-1.03, RH9 fully up2date, QS1.20, Perl 5.8.0, /etc/sysconfig/i18n configured for en_US encoding (non-UTF8) as well as all user .bash_profile files, McAfee's uvscan, SA 2.60, vpopmail-5.2.1) shows the following:

drwxrwx--- 5 qscand qscand 4096 Nov 3 18:14 working
/var/spool/qmailscan has the following:
drwxrwx--- 5 qscand qscand 4096 Dec 18 03:55 qmailscan
I have had no problems with my QS once I migrated it all over from an aging RH7.3 box to this new RH9 machine. Granted, I'm only serving a couple dozen virtual accounts via vpopmail across 2 domains, but its been working fine for me.
Hope that helps,
Bob J
