When I first setup Q-S and Sophos I also setup an automated virus definitions update script that would pull down the latest definitions from Sophos whenever a new alert was sent out by Sophos. The idea being that my virus defs would be updated within a few minutes of Sophos alerting me of any changes. This sounds like a good, smart thing to do....Until a posting a few days ago from our very own Jason Haar.
Jason, you briefly alluded to how you perform updates. If I recall correctly you don't do them immediately but wait until late at night and down load the vdefs once/day. You also said that during the updating one must be careful as it could screw up message scanning if a message was being scanned while the vdefs were being updated. Did I understand this properly? If so, would this scenario hold true if you used Sophie daemon (which I do) instead of sweep (the commandline executable)? Doesn't sophie load all of the vdefs into memory and won't re-read the vdefs unless it is HUP'ed? If this is true then one could update the vdefs at any time, HUP sophie so that any new messages get scanned with the new vdefs, and old sophie child processes still scanning messages would still be using the old vdefs and not be affected. Of course if I still used sweep then what you have described would be true. If the problem does occur that you described what sort of error messages does Q-S report? Am I on base or in left center field? It is early morning but I have had my tea and a good nights sleep so my brain is probably functioning as good as can be :-) Ed. _______________________________________________________________ Don't miss the 2002 Sprint PCS Application Developer's Conference August 25-28 in Las Vegas -- http://devcon.sprintpcs.com/adp/index.cfm _______________________________________________ Qmail-scanner-general mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/qmail-scanner-general
