Unfortunately, that didn't seem to do anything. That is, I didn't see it update `qgis-bin.env` and ultimately QGIS did not start or even pop up a window. I was hoping for an elegant solution like your script, but I was unable to completely trace out the various cascading scripts that set up the QGIS environment.
