Andrea, Thank you very much for your kind help. Based on what you said, I uninstalled and cleaned all traces of QGIS. Then I installed the 3.40.6 (Bratislava) LTS download (not installer). I was able to clip by mask layer for the first time ever. It appeared to work, but I got an error message that I will report in my other thread. I think I am back in the saddle now with QGIS, thanks to you.
