It may also help to set the Min. and Max. Zoom Level in the XYZ Connections (if that is how you are getting Google Earth, like I am). These are the setting I use. It makes loading any large area take a long time, but I am almost always looking at small areas.

What I did, in the past was to zoom in, and export the project as an image, pan and then start over again. These .tiff files will be georeferenced. I would then load these file into the project and use those as the background.
