Hi David

Just to Clarify Richards comments.  A shape file is a collection of files, all with the same prefix.  At a minimum, you should have 3 files, *.shp, *.shx and *.dbf.  There may also be a few more files as well depending on how the file was created.  You may just have the  *.shp file which is creating the error.

Do you have the "side car" files .shx and .dbf and possibly others?

    Hello

I'm pointing the Data source Manager|Vector at a .shp file and
getting the error "Invalid Data Source". The file exists on an
external drive, and the path is valid - any ideas on what could be
    causing this?
