Hi Grant, If you unzip them yes. Map packages are compressed files containing the map documents (mxd) and source data. The source data is usually in shapefile or file geodatabase format along with standard raster formats like geotiffs. If you unzip the mpk you can work with the files in QGIS. The spatial data will be found in the commondata folder.
