Hi Luca,

You can find the images also in the online archives of the mailing list:
http://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/qgis-user/2015-June/032464.html (scroll down to the bottom).

The issue with ArcGIS is that only a very small fraction of the devs and users has access to ArcGIS - so unless you can point to some public document that explains an issue or function (e.g. online version of ArcGIS documentation) there is not much value in pointing us to "the way ArcGIS" does it.

Greetings,
Andreas

Dear Andreas,

thank you for your hint, i just need to get used to a different environment. i didn't mean to make comparisons between arcgis and qgis, i know what are the differences between an open source project and a commercial software and i'm sorry if it sounded "bad", but really, the arcgis thing was only for better explaining what i meant and i hoped someone answered "yes, qgis has that function, just download this plugin / click on that small icon". anyway, the categorization function in the symbology section is almost identical to arcgis, that's why i expected something similar also in the labelling section! that said, do you have a link for your attachments? i cant see them as i'm reading in digest mode

There was talk in another email thread about doing something
similar for
AutoCAD support.

In all seriousness, what would be the process of doing this? Has this
been done for any other QGIS features? Who would be paid? OSG,
specific
developers? Who would we talk to about something like this?

Yes - I will start working on a requirements document soon. I will
post
it on Google Docs so different people/organizations can contribute. In
the case of DXF/DWG, J?rgen Fischer of company Norbit will be able to
work on it. He also partially did the DXF export and knows the DXF
format quite well. For the import we will probably use a library
called
Teigha - the same library also used by ESRI, Bricscad, Intergraph and
many others. We will have to join the OpenDesignAlliance to get access
to this library and pay a yearly membership fee - we still have to
investigate which level of membership we need as an open source
project.
It is clear that the DWG import is harder than the DXF export, but the
Teigha library will help a lot.

yes - absolutely - it has been done before. Maybe 2/3 of the
recent new
features were introduced because of paid development, and there
has been
some co-financed and/or crowd-funded development efforts. As an
example,
the DXF export was funded by 3 Swiss communities, the database
relations
and nested forms had been paid by some Swiss organizations. Many
other,
mostly middle-european local governments (e.g. Tuscany, french
ministry
of environment, Agence de l'eau Garonne, Province of Vorarlberg
(Austria) ...) have contributed and funded as well.

Recently, there have been two successful crowd-funding initiatives:

* QGIS GRASS Plugin Upgrade Crowdfunding:
http://www.gissula.eu/qgis-grass-plugin-crowdfunding/
* QGIS live layer effects:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/41633306/a-christmas-gift-for-qgis-live-layer-effects-for-q

The QGIS PSC will invest some efforts to help such crowd funding
initiatives and make them more visible on our website, mailing
lists and
social media.

Besides the DWG import crowd funding effort, Nyall Dawson also
plans to
soon introduce a funding effort for print composer
rewrite/improvements
and a new reporting framework.

But seriously, I've shown people who've only used Arc QGIS and
they love
it! They find the interface easier to understand and use, and some of
them also really latch onto the idea of it being F/OSS (beer AND
speech)! I only hope that at some point I have enough that I can give
back. QGIS is amazing and may be in the process of changing the
flow of
my life (more on that in a few months if this works ::fingers
crossed::).

Not to argue, since I'm not the one doing the work (and it's a feature
that could help me out a bit!), but how does this mesh with GPLv2 and
the goal of being a F/OSS platform?

What's the process for going about this? Let's say I want to start a
crowd funding campaign or fund a specific project. Would I contact the
PSC and hash out the feasibility and funding requirements?

HI,
I have a shapefile that shows up in a project. But whne I open it
into
another project it doesn't show up. In another instance I had a
shapefile
that I opened an it showed up, but was so extremely larger then
what it
should have been. I know this is a CRS issue, but not sure how to
correct.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
Chandler

Hi,
In your QGIS option, make sure CRS on the fly is activated. Also
make sure that the "what to do if file has no CRS" is set to "ask"
so that QGIS does not assume the projection is the project
projection or a default CRS.
Once the file is open, if the file has no CRS (prj file,), QGIS
will ask for a projection. At this point, you will need to add
one. If you are not sure, you can try something logical like a
local CRS. (Informed guess). Zoom to layer extent and see if you
are in the right spot. If not, you can right click on the
layer and change the CRS and then zoom to extent again. Look at
the x and y. Are you in meters or long\lat??? That will help
guessing. If you find the right CRS, you can save the file with
the new or corrected prj file in the "save as".

Hi,

I have developed my own model, which processes input vector layer. The
final output is vector layer that contains many attribute fields,
and of
course, also the geometry, but I need a simpler output - geometry
and most
of those fields are unnecessary. With this model, how can I get a
simple
table output with selected attribute fields of the output layer?

Thanks for any advice.
