Thanks. Uninstalling, and reinstalling as Admin user seems to solve it. Now I
can get on!

defaulted to the administrative user

Hi,
I am assuming you are using the QGIS easy installer and not the OSGEO
installer. It is good practice to login as admin in Windows to install any
software. In theory, you can do it from any account but you will be asked for
the admin password (but this will sometime give problems). If you are not
asked for a password, maybe something went wrong. I would uninstall QGIS and
try again with a new downloaded installer. If this fails, try the OSGEOW4
installer using the standard desktop option.

Unless you specify differently, any user can run QGIS from any account, admin
or not. If you have accents in your account name (like é), you could have
problems with some plugins.

QGIS is always installed with a number of software like Grass, Saga... You can
delete the short cuts from the desktop but, as you become more proficient in
QGIS, they will become handy. You can't delete the softwares.

The OSGEO4W Shell, for example will permit you to use GDAL directly from the
command line. You could do this directly from the windows command prompt but
you would need to change your system variable individually to make sure Windows
find the gdal software libraries and all it's dependencies. The OSGEO4W DOS
prompt does that for you.

Good luck

I have 64 bit windows 8.1, and 2 users – an administrative user and a
non-administrative one.

As I normally do for installations, I used the non-administrative user to
download and install the QGIS Standalone installer version 2.8 64 bit. It
seemed to install OK except that it was installed for the administrative user
(without asking me for any password). I only realised this when I could not
get it to work from the desktop of the user I had installed it in, and saw that
the sample data had been installed into the Documents folder of the
administrative user.

Do I have to keep using it from my administrative user? Did I miss this bit
of the installation documentation?

By the way I was a little confused to start with by all the new icons that
appeared on my desktops, and I am assuming I can ignore all but one:
a.. 3 on all desktops: MSYS, SAGA GIS (2.1.2), OSGEO4W Shell
b.. plus 3 just on the administrative user’s desktop: GRASS GIS 6.4.3, QGIS
Browser 2.8.2, QGIS Desktop 2.8.2
Now I have found how to run it I am looking forward to exploring QGIS for my
own uses. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to it.
