Hi I use standard gdal on Linux mint Debian edition without any problems regarding xls. Probably its a problem of "real" Linux mint but in this case Ubuntu should be affected too. Kind regards Werner

It's not platform, but OGR dependant. I suppose the GDAL/OGR on Linux mint isn't built with FreeXL[1] support and therefore you can't use Excel files directly.
