Following the advise at qgis.org <http://qgis.org>, I updated the
sources list file from Karmic to Lucid. Some files got downloaded,
others failed so I did a sudo apt-get update and still the outcome is
the same. Is it because I'm using the beta version and have to wait for

Qgis 1.4 have entered Debian recently, specially in Squeeze. But too
late to enter in Ubuntu Lucid because of the freeze. If you really want
to sync qgis in ubuntu from debian you must follow the special request
sync feature (look in ubuntu wiki-request sync after freeze).
