And yes, your are right: I probably should not bother anymore with 8 year old 
installs.

Your "perhaps relevant" link at the end was spot-on actually: my issue is 
exactly related to QtWebKit(Widgets).
I had a user report that it wasn't supported anymore, but he did not include 
any specifics (version, OS, etc.).
I am on Windows myself and I'm running the latest LTS (3.34) with PyQt 5.15.13 
and QtWebKit is still supported.
PyQt doesn't even raise a deprecation warning or anything.

So this stuff is complicated...

Either way, it seems to be better to refactor my code to use QtWebEngine 
instead.
Then I might still get complaints from that one user that still uses a 9 year 
old version of QGIS, but that complaint would be easier to ignore ;)
