Pretty much same as in case of symlinks:

1. In SVN repo you maintain the original file only. An external is a "kind of a symlink" to the original file. If you commit changes in the SVN repo to a file which has externals, those externals will have the latest content of that file after svn co/up in a working copy.

2. Less space used on the SVN server.
