Dear QEMU Developers, I am Soumyajyotii Ssarkar, a sophomore from India. It’s an honor for me to connect and engage with the QEMU community.
QEMU has been an integral part in my computing journey. Since my teenage years, enabling me to explore operating systems, especially retro and niche ones, deepening my understanding of computer architecture, from distro hopping to pushing the limits of different systems, QEMU has consistently been at the heart of my learning and development journey. The HPPA really fascinates me and I'm passionate about it, as it has paved the way for modern architecture. Over the past few months, I have been working under the mentorship of Helge Deller, for implementing the LASI Network Card and NCR710 SCSI Controller device model for QEMU as planned for this GSOC. In my research: - I have printed out datasheets, studied, and thoroughly researched both the LASI Network Card and NCR710 SCSI Controller device models. - I have thoroughly reviewed the existing implementation, related documentation, and have taken inspiration from prior work of my mentor to build upon. - I’ve been actively experimenting to refine both device models to ensure proper functionality. - My goal by the end of this GSOC cycle would be to: - Fully implement both the LASI Network Card and the NCR710 SCSI Controller. - Ensure the implementations are functionally completed. - Align the code with QEMU’s coding standards and quality expectations. - Constantly update the community with my progress keeping everyone in loop. I have also, under guidance of Helge Deller, reached out to Mark Cave-Ayland who would also assist me through the NCR710 implementation as required. My plans post GSOC, would be to further work on the HPPA side of QEMU, further implement device models, and maintain them in the long term. I believe this project would bring QEMU closer to emulating all possible devices, specially the retro ones, which is our duty to preserve. I genuinely look forward to a productive summer working on QEMU, and with wonderful people like you all who made such amazing emulating software, which played such a major role in my upbringing. Thank you, Soumyajyotii Ssarkar.
