You're doing it on a bare metal machine, right? In that case, there should also be a kvm_intel or kvm_amd module, depending on CPU. Its absence could indicate disabled hardware virtualization features (VT-x for Intel and some other name for AMD) - check your BIOS to see if it's enabled.
