I'm not sure what Solaris does here, so I frankly have no idea if this is 
supposed to work. IDE and AHCI are different interfaces, so there's a good 
chance it simply doesn't work. How about real hardware? Can you take an 
openSolaris installation, install it using ICH in IDE mode, switch to AHCI mode 
and it works?
