I thought about that, too. But it would have to be a pretty broken caller to rely on this function to preserve *pbs if it fails and to overwrite it otherwise. But you're right, to conform with the behavior of bdrv_open/bdrv_file_open, it would probably make more sense not to overwrite *pbs.
