Peter pointed out that my code doesn't work as advertized when !list->merge_list (never true in current usage). I'll try to address that on top when I get a breather I can spend on non-critical upstream work. Peter, do feel free to go ahead and change it the way you like it. If you do that, I'll spend the breather on reviewing your change :)
