I am using xorg edgers on Ubuntu 12.10 because I have a brand new box and have been seeing graphics issues so trying latest drivers. However, I am fairly sure I tried booting that qemu image on the stock Ubuntu kernel (3.5.0.21.27) with the same result. -- Mark Blakeney.
