This may change some string argument in CFLAGS, for example an argument to -I. How about: CFLAGS_opt = -O2 CFLAGS += $(CFLAGS_opt) ... %/translate.o: CFLAGS_opt = -O1 -- error compiling committee.c: too many arguments to function
