Surely that's more of a "won't" than a "can't"? Your post to this list has
both names clearly displayed and Google+ would let you do the same albeit
by marking your usual name as a nickname and it would appear in parentheses
exactly as it does on your Facebook profile.

I do agree though that there are many people who simply don't want to give
all their personal data to such sites, and that has to be kept in mind when
suggesting we all decamp from a mailing list to a community: I use both
Facebook and Google, but I avoid giving FB more information than I have to
to get what I want from them. With Google I give them a lot more
information because they give me a lot of benefits in return (Google Now
for example). I also believe (perhaps wrongly) that Facebook makes money
from selling my information to third parties whereas Google makes money by
keeping my information to themselves. Other people I know refuse to use
Google+ or refuse to use Facebook (possibly some use neither but I probably
don't see them online much).
