I had 2 goals: one to reduce the delta with Debian so that Ubuntu gets updates sooner and easier, and 2nd, it seemed to me like pymysql support was something useful for django in Debian too. This issue isn't really blocking anything for me. Raphaƫl's proposal of improving the pymysql packaging so that it can be a drop-in replacement for py-mysqldb rather than patching individual apps seems like a good idea, but I don't have plans to do this work myself.
