For grep: grep '\(and\|or\|xor\)[[:space:]]*#' myfile For Vim: :g/\(and\|or\|xor\)\s*#/ The one I gave originally is a python regexp, and thus should be tested within python, not grep or vim or emacs or sed or whatever.
