Steve, I had the same problem, the only thing I found that worked was using the MySQL-python installer (http://pythonmac.org/packages/MySQL_python-1.2.0-py2.4-macosx10.3.zip) found at the site below. It says it is for 10.3 but I have had no problems using it on 10.4. Hope that helps.
