use pil for image processing in python (http://www.pythonware.com/products/pil/)
if pil is not installed then i don't think you can process png files (well at least there is a pure python jpeg decoder: http://davidf.sjsoft.com/files/pyjpeg/) -- http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list
