It is not 'deprecated'. Rather, official python.org support, including security fixes, has ended. The same is true of 3.x up to 3.5, and 3.6 by the end of the year. I don't know if RedHat, for instance, followed through with plans to extend security fixes for customers paying for long-term support releases. If they have, a patched 2.7 might be safer than the last 3.5.
