Hmm, do you say Python 3 is "cult-like" without survey other popular, programming languages? There are many popular languages which separate bytes and unicode string explicitly and string is not byte-transparent; C#, Java, ECMAScript, (including families like TypeScript), Rust, Swift, Julia, and more.
